The Aam Aadmi Party passed a confidence motion in the Punjab Assembly on May 1, 2026. The motion was moved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. It received unanimous support from AAP members.

AAP holds a majority with 94 MLAs in the Assembly. During the voting, 88 of these MLAs were present. The Congress has 16 MLAs and the Shiromani Akali Dal has 3 MLAs.

The Congress staged a walkout, while the Bharatiya Janata Party boycotted the session. The confidence motion aimed to counter rumors of instability within the AAP following significant defections.

Seven of AAP’s ten MPs in the Rajya Sabha split from the party and joined the BJP. This move raised concerns about AAP’s governance amid speculation.

The successful passing of this motion is seen as a critical step toward maintaining political stability in Punjab. Bhagwant Mann emphasized unity among party members during the session, stating, “We are united, and this motion should be passed unanimously.”

The AAP has been in power in Punjab since winning a decisive majority in the assembly elections. The passage of this confidence motion reflects legislators’ confidence in the government’s capabilities.
