Canada: Monty Desai Appointed Head Coach of Cricket Canada
Monty Desai has been appointed as the new head coach of the men’s national cricket team in Canada. His role aims to revitalize Cricket Canada amidst ongoing national security concerns.
Desai brings 20 years of international coaching experience to the position. Arvinder Khosa, a key figure in Cricket Canada, stated, “Our foremost priority is to restore Cricket Canada’s prominence through performance, professionalism, and a renewed and vitalized sense of purpose.”
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) highlighted the threat posed by Khalistani elements in its 2025 report. This report marks the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing, which killed 329 people, most of them Canadians.
Despite these threats, no CBKE-related attacks occurred in Canada in 2025 according to the same report. However, ongoing involvement in violent extremist activities by CBKEs continues to pose a national security threat to Canada and its interests.
In addition to these security concerns, around 280 remote communities in Canada remain disconnected from the main North American grid and rely on diesel-based microgrids for energy. Major projects often have to build their own energy infrastructure, increasing costs and project timelines.
Canada has identified key minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements as part of its energy transition strategy. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for collaboration in energy, critical minerals, investment, defense, and AI. He stated, “By working closely together in energy, critical minerals, investment, defence, and AI to move faster in these endeavours, we will create more opportunities for our people.”
Observers expect that Desai’s leadership will help address both the challenges facing Cricket Canada and broader issues related to national security.
