Mamata banerjee
Mamata Banerjee’s political dominance in West Bengal is challenged as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) makes significant electoral gains, marking a potential shift in the state’s political landscape. In the 2026 West Bengal elections, the BJP won 44 seats and led in 160 of the 294 seats. In contrast, Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured only 21 seats and was leading in 62.
Before this election, Banerjee had been a formidable force for 15 years. She addressed a record 90 rallies and led 22 roadshows in two months leading up to the elections. However, her government faced allegations of corruption and anti-incumbency sentiments among voters. The special intensive revision of the electoral roll also removed around 9.1 million names, including 6.3 million dead and absentee voters.
The BJP’s strategy effectively mobilized voters. They arranged trains for approximately 2.2 million migrant workers to return home and vote. This effort proved crucial as many women voters, who were previously a strong support base for Banerjee, appeared to reject her this time around.
Banerjee’s policies faced scrutiny during the campaign. The BJP accused her of appeasing Muslims by providing financial allowances to Imams and Muezzins—₹2,500 monthly for Imams and ₹1,500 for Muezzins. Additionally, her financial grant for Durga Puja committees was challenged but upheld as community policing.
Experts suggest that these electoral results reflect a growing discontent among various voter segments in West Bengal. Udayan Bandopadhyay noted that Banerjee’s initial rise began with movements against the Left Front government back in 2000. Yet now, she faces a new challenge that could reshape her legacy.
The next steps for both parties will be critical as they navigate this new political landscape. Banerjee’s ability to regain support will depend on addressing voter concerns effectively while countering the BJP’s growing influence.
As the dust settles from the elections, it remains clear that Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing political reign is now under serious threat.
