Eci: Election Commission of India to Publish Supplementary Voter List in West Bengal
The Election Commission of India is set to publish a supplementary voter list today in West Bengal. This move comes amidst ongoing controversies regarding voter exclusions. The ECI aims to address these issues through the Special Investigation Revision (SIR) process.
Prior to this development, there were significant concerns over the accuracy of the electoral rolls. Many voters felt excluded and raised objections. The ECI has now settled 27 lakh pending voter records, processing around 2 lakh names daily.
This change directly impacts various political parties and candidates in West Bengal. They are keenly observing how many names appear on the new list and how it may affect their election strategies.
Key statistics:
- 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled.
- Approximately 2 lakh names are processed daily.
- 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts for objections.
Voters can appeal online using the ECI Net app or offline at district offices if they find discrepancies in the list. This provides a platform for those who feel their rights may have been overlooked.
In contrast, Tamil Nadu’s recent electoral roll publication indicates a drop in the total voter count from 6.41 crore to 5.67 crore. This decline raises questions about the engagement of voters in that state.
The largest constituency in Chennai, Shozhinganallur, has 5,36,991 electors, while Thiruvallur district tops with 31,57,413 voters. Conversely, Ariyalur district has the fewest electors at 5,22,954.
Archana Patnaik emphasized that anyone can check their names on the ECI website. This feature aims to enhance transparency and accessibility for voters during this critical period.
The state government has issued directives to district magistrates to ensure crowd control measures during this time. The outcome of these efforts will be closely monitored as elections approach.
