Anticipated World Cup clash

The Miami Stadium is set to host a World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between Argentina and Cape Verde on Friday. This encounter is being highlighted as a potential mismatch, pitting the current world champions against a nation making its debut in the tournament. Argentina, a three-time World Cup winner, will face Cape Verde, a team that has defied expectations by reaching the knockout rounds.

Argentina enters the match as group winners, having secured three victories in their group stage. Their squad features a number of prominent players, with 21 based in Europe’s top five domestic leagues. Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and forward Lionel Messi are part of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami. The team’s combined value for their first eleven is substantial, with Chelsea‘s Enzo Fernandez being a highly valued player.

Cape Verde, on the other hand, advanced as runners-up in their group. Their journey to the Round of 32 marks them as the smallest country to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup. The team’s coach, Bubista, has stated that their fearless approach, which proved successful in qualification and the group stage, will remain unchanged against Argentina.

Team backgrounds and player values

Argentina boasts a rich history in international football, having won the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022. They have also achieved significant continental success, winning the Copa America a record 16 times, including the last two tournaments. The team has consistently ranked among the top three in the Fifa world rankings since March 2022.

Cape Verde’s football federation was established in 1982, becoming a Fifa member in 1986. They first entered World Cup qualifying in 2002. The team’s recent development saw them finish top of their qualifying group for the 2026 finals, with only one defeat in 10 matches. Cape Verde broke into the Fifa top 100 in 2006 and reached their highest-ever ranking of 27th in 2014. They are currently ranked 64th.

The Cape Verde squad relies heavily on its diaspora, with 12 players born in the country and others born in the Netherlands, France, and Portugal. No player in their squad is based in the country’s semi-professional domestic league. While 23 players are in Europe, only Villarreal defender Logan Costa plays in one of the continent’s top five leagues. Goalkeeper Vozinha, a 40-year-old who has been a notable performer, recently became a free agent after his contract with Portuguese second division side Chaves expired.

The squad’s overall value is lower than that of many other teams in the tournament. Their most valuable player is Trabzonspor‘s Wagner Pina, who made his only World Cup appearance when Cabral was suspended. Other key players in terms of value include Sidny Lopes Cabral and Krasnodar‘s Kevin Pina.

Match details and team news

The match will be the first meeting between Argentina and Cape Verde. Argentina has a strong record against African opponents in the World Cup, having won their last seven such games. Cape Verde, in their debut World Cup appearance, will be the third team to face the reigning champions in the knockout stages, following Norway in 1938 and Ghana in 2006.

No injuries have been reported in the Argentina camp. For Cape Verde, Telmo Arcanjo is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral will be available for selection after serving a one-match ban. The game is scheduled for Friday, July 3, at 6pm Eastern Daylight Time in the United States.

Lionel Messi, who has scored six goals in the tournament, is a contender for the Golden Boot. Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, has dismissed suggestions that Cape Verde will be an easy opponent, emphasising the need to respect their performance. According to pre-match simulations, Argentina has an 81 percent chance of winning the game in regulation time.

The predicted lineup for Argentina includes Martinez in goal, with Molina, Romero, Martinez, and Medina in defence. The midfield is expected to feature De Paul, Mac Allister, Fernandez, and Almada, while Messi and Martinez are predicted to lead the attack. Cape Verde’s predicted lineup features Vozinha in goal, with Moreira, Lopes, Borges, and Cabral in defence. Pina is expected to play as a defensive midfielder, supported by Mendes, Duarte, Monteiro, and Semedo in midfield, with Livramento as the sole striker. The match is scheduled for Friday, July 3.

England secured their spot in the World Cup last 16 after a challenging match against DR Congo. The team faced difficulties early on, with DR Congo taking the lead. Historically, England has not won a knockout game after falling behind since their 1966 World Cup victory against West Germany.

Harry Kane played a pivotal role in England‘s comeback. His first goal came after Declan Rice moved to right-back, an area that appeared vulnerable following the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Rice passed to substitute Anthony Gordon, who delivered a ball for Kane to head home. The goalkeeper, who had previously seemed impenetrable, was beaten by the power of the shot.

The second goal, also assisted by Gordon, was described as a game-changer. Kane received the ball, took a touch to bypass defenders, and unleashed a powerful shot that was deemed unsaveable. The coach of DR Congo acknowledged that it took the best striker in the world to defeat their team.

Gordon praises Kane’s consistency

Anthony Gordon, who recently signed with Barcelona from Newcastle, provided both assists for Harry Kane during the match. Following the game, Gordon spoke about Kane, drawing comparisons to Barcelona great Lionel Messi.

Gordon highlighted Kane‘s elite level of play, noting that his current season has only been surpassed by Lionel Messi. He described being around Kane as an opportunity to learn and observe his habits, emphasizing that Kane‘s consistency, hard work, and seriousness in every drill contribute to his high performance.

Gordon recalled that he knew Kane‘s second shot was destined for the net as soon as it was struck. He stressed that while any player at that level can score a good goal, Kane‘s consistent phenomenal performance in training and games sets him apart. Gordon views Kane as an inspiration to his teammates.

VAR controversies and upcoming fixtures

The match also saw several decisions involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) that sparked discussion. One incident involved Harry Kane being denied a penalty, with the referee not even sending it for review. According to one review, it was considered a deserved penalty.

Another VAR controversy occurred in a different match, where Belgium was awarded a penalty in the 125th minute, with many observers believing the initial contact happened outside the box. Additionally, a red card issued to Balogun was described as odd, as the on-field referee did not initially give a red card and the tackle was considered accidental or reckless rather than violent.

Looking ahead, England is scheduled to face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca. Other upcoming matches include Spain against Austria, and Portugal facing Croatia.

The match between Spain and Austria is set for July 3, 12:30 AM IST. Spain, the reigning European champions, feature talented players like Lamine Yamal and are known for their ball possession. Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, is described as a disciplined team.

For Spain, key players like Pedri and Fabián Ruiz are expected to dictate the tempo, aiming to create gaps in Austria‘s defence for players like Yamal to exploit. Austria‘s strategy will likely involve pressing Spain‘s build-up, trapping the ball wide, and disrupting their rhythm to prevent Spain from establishing control.

The Portugal versus Croatia match is scheduled for July 3, 4:30 AM IST. This game will feature veteran players like Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal and Luka Modrić for Croatia. The midfield battle is anticipated to be a crucial aspect of this encounter.

Portugal will aim to prevent Croatia from controlling the midfield, with players like Bruno Fernandes expected to create opportunities. Croatia will rely on Luka Modrić to influence the game. One report indicates that Barcelona has inquired about Kane during the World Cup, with his contract set to expire next year.

However, it has been reported that Kane is expected to remain at Bayern and sign a new contract, while Barcelona may shift their focus to Julian Alvarez. The US also secured a 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Tillman scoring a free-kick to seal the win after a red card incident.

Historic Victory at Azteca

Mexico secured a significant World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Ecuador 2-0 in a match that broke a four-decade drought for the national team. The win marks the first time Mexico has advanced past the last-32 stage since 1986. The match, held at the iconic Azteca Stadium, was delayed by an hour due to an electrical storm.

The atmosphere at Azteca was described as roaring and pulsating throughout the evening. This victory, achieved on home soil, held particular significance for manager Javier Aguirre, who had overseen previous early exits in 2002 and 2010. Aguirre expressed that no other victory compared to this one, given it occurred at home with their own supporters.

The first goal for Mexico came from Julián Quiñones in the 22nd minute, who received a pass from Jésus Gallardo and struck the ball into the net. Quiñones’ goal was his third of the tournament. Nine minutes later, Raúl Jiménez, at 35 years old, added the second goal in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a clearance error and exchanging passes with Quiñones before scoring past Ecuador’s goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez. This was Jiménez’s second goal of the tournament.

Impact of Travel Fatigue on Ecuador

Ecuador’s team faced significant travel challenges leading up to the match, which may have impacted their performance. Their journey to Mexico City, initially expected to take just over three hours, extended to nine hours. The Ecuadorian Football Federation lodged a formal complaint regarding the delay, citing concerns about fair play and equity.

Experts suggest that such extensive travel can affect player recovery and performance. Physiotherapist Julio Caballero highlighted that travel fatigue, including prolonged sitting, disrupted routines, and accumulated physical and mental stress, can influence a knockout tie. He noted that while travel does not directly cause injuries, it can reduce a player’s capacity to tolerate the demands of a high-intensity match.

The issue of travel fatigue is particularly relevant in a World Cup spread across multiple countries, where teams must cope with long flights and varying recovery times. This contrasts sharply with the Qatar World Cup, where distances between stadiums were minimal, and travel was primarily by bus. Medical teams employ strategies to mitigate the effects of travel, such as encouraging postural changes, calf contractions, adequate hydration, and compression garments during flights.

Looking Ahead to the Round of 16

Mexico’s win extends their unbeaten run to 12 games. They are now set to play another home match on Sunday against the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This upcoming fixture will be the last of this summer’s World Cup matches to be held in Mexico.

A standout performer for Mexico was 17-year-old Gilberto Mora, who delivered an astonishing performance from the right side of a midfield three. His range and quick feet were instrumental in Mexico’s strong first-half showing. Ecuador’s best chance came through substitute Kevin Rodríguez, who shot wide, and defender Piero Hincapié was dismissed in added time.

Mexico’s manager, Aguirre, mentioned his intention to watch the England versus DR Congo game to prepare for their next opponent. He emphasized the need for his team to remain sharp to maintain their momentum and deliver another complete performance on Sunday.

This victory also marks a historic moment as Mexico became the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a CONMEBOL side in a World Cup knockout match, overturning a trend where South American teams had won the previous five such encounters.

Messi’s Ascent to Top Scorer

Lionel Messi of Argentina has surpassed the previous record for most goals scored in World Cup history. He has now scored goals in the competition. This achievement includes a hat trick in his opening game and additional goals against Austria and Jordan. Messi’s current performance adds to his legacy, as this marks his sixth appearance in the World Cup.

His recent goals include his 17th and 18th during Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria. He then added his 19th goal against Jordan with a free kick from outside the box. Messi has played in six World Cups and has won the Ballon d’Or award a record eight times in his professional career.

Across his 29 World Cup appearances, Messi averages two goals per three games played. He also maintains a high rate of World Cup assists, with six assists in his career, averaging about one assist in every four games.

Mbappé’s Challenge and Records

Kylian Mbappé, the forward for France, is also rapidly climbing the list of all-time World Cup goal scorers. He currently has 16 World Cup goals. Mbappé scored four goals in the first two games of the current tournament. This is his third World Cup appearance.

Mbappé has already made significant contributions to his national team. During this year’s cup, the 27-year-old became the French national team’s all-time top goal scorer. He surpassed Olivier Giroud’s record of 58 goals with two strikes in a 3-1 win over Senegal on June 16.

Mbappé holds the record for most goals scored during a World Cup final, with four. In his 17 World Cup matches, he averages about one score per game. He has two assists in his World Cup appearances, averaging an assist every eight games.

When asked about the best players among this World Cup’s stars, including Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, and himself, Mbappé stated, “Lionel Messi. It’s clear.”

Historical Context and Competition

The battle for the all-time World Cup goal-scoring record has intensified between Messi and Mbappé. Both players entered the tournament with substantial goal tallies, Messi with 13 previous World Cup goals and Mbappé with 12.

The 2022 World Cup final in Qatar saw the two players compete directly, with Argentina securing the trophy. In that match, Mbappé achieved a hat trick, a feat that has only occurred twice in World Cup history.

The record for most goals scored during a World Cup career has been a dynamic one. Miroslav Klose’s 2014 record of 16 World Cup goals was recently surpassed. Other high-scoring players in World Cup history include Harry Kane of England and Jürgen Klinsmann of Germany are tied with 11 goals each, as is Sándor Kocsis of Hungary, who scored all his 11 World Cup goals at the 1954 tournament.

Both Argentina and France are considered strong contenders to win the current tournament, with France being the current favorite according to multiple sportsbooks, and Argentina close behind.

Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal also made history by becoming the first player to score at six World Cups.

Senegal’s Dominant Performance in Toronto

Senegal secured a significant 5-0 victory over 10-man Iraq in their final Group I match, a result that has revitalised their hopes of advancing to the World Cup last 32. The win, which saw Senegal become the first African nation to score five goals in a men’s World Cup match, was crucial for their goal difference and their standing among the best third-placed teams.

The match, played in Toronto, began with an early advantage for Senegal when Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the fourth minute. This initial goal set the tone for the game, which saw Iraq facing an uphill battle from early on.

Key Moments and Second-Half Surge

Iraq’s challenge intensified in the 13th minute when defender Rebin Sulaka received a red card. Referee Anthony Taylor initially showed a yellow card after Sadio Mané was fouled, but a VAR review led to the decision being upgraded to a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. This left Iraq to play with 10 men for more than 75 minutes of the match.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Iraq managed to hold off Senegal for the remainder of the first half. However, the second half saw a dramatic shift in momentum, with Senegal launching a relentless offensive.

The second-half onslaught began in the 56th minute when Ismaïla Sarr scored his third goal of the tournament, finishing from close range after a setup by Lamine Camara. This goal made Sarr Senegal’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup and marked him as the first Senegal player to achieve both a goal and an assist in the same World Cup match.

Substitute Pape Gueye then made a significant impact, scoring two sensational long-range goals. His first came just before the hour mark, curling a left-footed strike past Jalal Hassan. He followed this with another powerful half-volley in the 71st minute, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance. Gueye’s brace made him the first Senegal player to score at least two goals as a substitute in a World Cup match.

The rout was completed in the 82nd minute by Iliman Ndiaye, who also scored with a long-range effort. Notably, Sarr, Gueye, and Ndiaye all finished the match with both a goal and an assist, a feat not seen by three players from the same team in a World Cup match since Germany’s victory over Brazil in 2014.

Implications for Qualification

The emphatic 5-0 victory significantly boosted Senegal’s goal difference, which is crucial for their qualification chances. They currently hold the fifth-best record among third-placed sides with a +2 goal difference. However, their fate remains uncertain as four teams below them have yet to play their final group matches. Senegal finished third in Group I, behind France and Norway.

This historic performance has kept Senegal’s World Cup knockout hopes alive, as they vie for one of the eight third-place spots in the last 32. The team must now await the results of the remaining group-stage fixtures to determine if their strong showing will be enough to secure their progression.

Ecuador secured a spot in the World Cup last 32 after a memorable 2-1 comeback victory against Germany. The win, achieved on Thursday in New Jersey, saw the South American nation advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match began with an early lead for Germany, as Leroy Sane scored less than two minutes into the Group E clash. This goal, however, was met with strong protests from the Ecuador side, who felt a foul on Pedro Vite by Aleksandar Pavlovic in the build-up should have been called. Despite the controversy, the goal stood, giving Germany an initial advantage.

Ecuador, needing a win to keep their tournament hopes alive, responded swiftly. Seven minutes after Germany‘s opening goal, Nilson Angulo, a winger for Sunderland, drilled a low shot past Manuel Neuer from 20 yards out. This equaliser came after Felix Nmecha lost possession in his own half, allowing Ecuador to capitalise and level the score at 1-1. This goal marked Ecuador‘s first of the tournament, breaking a streak of 39 previous attempts without scoring.

Second-Half Drama and Decisive Goal

The second half saw continued intensity. Early in the half, Germany believed they had earned a penalty when Kai Havertz was brought down in the box. However, the decision was overturned by VAR, which identified a foul by Sane on Vite in the preceding play. This intervention brought relief to the Ecuadorian team and their supporters.

Germany‘s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, made tactical changes, including bringing on Deniz Undav, who had previously scored two goals in a 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast. Despite these efforts, Ecuador maintained their attacking pressure. Enner Valencia tested Neuer with a powerful shot, and a defensive miscommunication between Neuer and Jonathan Tah nearly allowed Kevin Rodriguez to score.

The decisive moment arrived 13 minutes from time. Kevin Rodriguez flicked on a corner, and Gonzalo Plata was in position to stab the ball home from close range, right in front of Neuer. This goal sealed a 2-1 victory for Ecuador, ending Germany‘s 11-match winning streak and securing Ecuador‘s progression to the knockout stage for only the second time in their history. The goal sparked emotional celebrations among the largely Ecuadorian crowd present in New Jersey.

Implications for Both Teams

For Germany, who had already secured the top spot in their group, the match was not a must-win, yet the outcome was described as a sour note to end their group stage. Nagelsmann had made two injury-enforced changes to his lineup, with Antonio Rudiger replacing Nico Schlotterbeck due to ankle ligament damage, and David Raum stepping in for Nathaniel Brown at left-back. Despite these changes, the team’s performance in the second half, particularly from the bench players, was noted as lacking effectiveness.

Germany will now travel to Foxborough for their last-32 tie, where they will face another third-placed finisher on Monday. This will be their first World Cup knockout match since they lifted the trophy in 2014. For Ecuador, the victory represents a significant achievement, propelling them into the next round of the tournament against expectations, particularly after securing only one point in their initial two group games.

The match was played on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
