World Cup 2026: Koeman resigns as Netherlands report 'appalling' racist abuse

Ronald Koeman has resigned from his position as Netherlands manager following the team’s exit from the World Cup. The departure comes after players faced “appalling” racist abuse online for missing penalties in their decisive match.

The Netherlands were eliminated in the last-32 stage by Morocco after a penalty shootout, which followed a 1-1 draw in Monterrey. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville were among the players who missed their penalty attempts, subsequently becoming targets of discriminatory, racist, and hateful comments on social media, according to the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

Koeman, at 63, has concluded his second tenure leading the national side. He suggested that this might mark the end of his managerial career entirely. In an Instagram post, he reflected on his career, expressing pride in working with clubs and individuals who shaped him and provided cherished memories.

He acknowledged the team’s shared dream of making history in the World Cup, stating his deep disappointment that it did not materialise. Koeman also shared that recent years have shifted his perspective, highlighting the greater importance of health over football, especially as his wife, Bartina, is battling breast cancer.

KNVB Condemns Abuse and Ibrahimovic’s Criticism

The KNVB has announced its intention to pursue criminal charges against individuals responsible for abusing its players. The association described the abuse as “appalling” and stated that legal staff would evaluate whether the comments constitute a punishable offence. This could lead to a formal complaint being filed with the Public Prosecution Service, potentially initiating a criminal investigation.

The association emphasised that football unites millions, while discrimination works against the sport’s core values. This situation mirrors incidents from 2021 when England players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho experienced similar abuse after missing penalties in the European Championship final. That incident resulted in prison sentences for two individuals and a suspended sentence for another.

Adding to the post-match fallout, football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic sharply criticised Koeman‘s tactics, asserting that the Dutch national team had lost its distinct identity under his management. Ibrahimovic stated his anger, remarking, “Lose with your identity… that is what you are.”

The match itself was a dramatic affair. Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute. However, Morocco equalised in stoppage time when Issa Diop headed in a cross from Chemsdine Talbi in the 91st minute, forcing extra time.

During the penalty shootout, Morocco‘s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial save against Crysencio Summerville. Ismael Saibari then converted the decisive penalty, securing a 3-2 shootout victory for Morocco and their progression to the Round of 16.

Koeman’s Tenure and Future

While Koeman‘s contract was set to expire, he felt the timing was right to step away, partly to spend time with his ill wife. His first spell as Netherlands manager, which began in 2018, was widely considered a success. During that period, he introduced players like Frenkie de Jong and achieved victories in Nations League games against teams such as France and Germany. He also guided the team to qualification for the Euros before taking on the role at Barcelona.

His return to manage the Netherlands proved more challenging. Many observers felt he adopted an overly defensive approach. Against Morocco, he opted for a five-defender formation, a tactic he had not frequently used, which was seen as a significant adjustment that allowed Morocco to dictate play. His second campaign struggled to gain momentum, despite drawing twice with Spain in Nations League games.

The disappointment stemmed from the team’s inability to consistently reach the performance levels seen in his earlier tenure. Following the match, it became evident that Koeman would depart, signalling the need for a fresh start for the Dutch national team.

The KNVB will now begin the search for a new manager to lead the Netherlands.
