Ireland secures historic T20I victory over India in Belfast
Ireland’s Historic Triumph
Ireland achieved a significant milestone by securing their first-ever victory against India in the opening match of the T20I series in Belfast. The hosts defeated the reigning T20 world champions by 34 runs on Friday, marking a historic moment for Irish cricket across all formats of the game.
The win gives Ireland a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. This victory was particularly notable as Ireland had previously lost all eight of their T20Is against India.
Batting and Bowling Performances
Opting to bat first, Ireland posted a challenging total of 182/9 in their 20 overs. Captain Lorcan Tucker played a pivotal role, scoring a half-century. He was supported by Gareth Delany, who contributed 49 runs off 32 balls. The Irish batters accelerated their scoring in the later overs, accumulating 46 runs in two overs during the 16th and 17th.
Tucker, after a slow start, reached his fifty in 35 balls. He targeted left-arm spinner Axar Patel in the 13th over, hitting 4, 4, 6. Delany was particularly severe on Prasidh Krishna, smashing 4, 6, 6, 6 in the 16th over, which yielded 27 runs. Washington Sundar’s solitary over also proved expensive, conceding 19 runs.
For India, Harshit Rana was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 3/24. He dismissed both Irish openers and later accounted for Lorcan Tucker. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel each claimed two wickets.
In response, India’s batting line-up struggled under pressure and was dismissed for 148 runs in 18.5 overs. Despite a rapid 49 runs off 20 balls from Abhishek Sharma, the rest of the Indian batters could not build significant partnerships. Abhishek Sharma’s innings included seven fours and two sixes, and he reached his fifty in just 19 deliveries, marking his fifth T20I fifty in 20 balls or fewer.
Ireland’s bowling attack delivered an inspiring performance. Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys and Matt Hollard both secured three-wicket hauls. Debutant Jai Moondra also had a memorable outing, finishing with figures of 2/25 in four overs.
Key Moments and Player Performances
India’s chase began with an aggressive start from Abhishek Sharma, who helped the team reach 68 for three in the powerplay. However, wickets fell consistently at the other end. Ishan Kishan managed only one run before being caught by Lorcan Tucker off Matt Hollard. Shreyas Iyer’s debut as India’s T20I captain also saw him score only three runs off seven balls before being dismissed by Hollard.
Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal to Liam McCarthy’s off-cutter, caught at deep midwicket, was a turning point. After this, India’s chase lost momentum. Tilak Varma scored 19 off 21 balls, and Washington Sundar contributed nine runs off 12 deliveries. Shivam Dube briefly threatened with 25 runs, including two sixes, but his dismissal to Jai Moondra effectively ended India’s hopes.
The Indian pacers, including Harshit Rana, focused on hard lengths, which initially limited Ireland’s scoring. Rana, returning from a four-month injury lay-off, removed Ross Adair and Tim Tector in the powerplay, reducing Ireland to 30 for three. Arshdeep Singh also contributed by dismissing Harry Tector.
Despite the early setbacks, Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany built a crucial 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket, rescuing Ireland from 51 for four. Delany’s aggressive hitting in the death overs, particularly against Prasidh Krishna, helped Ireland reach a competitive total.

The match also saw the anticipated international debut of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for India not materialize, as he was not part of the playing XI. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy debut ended in disappointment, with his team unable to chase the target set by Ireland.
The two teams are scheduled to play again in the second and final T20I on Sunday.
