IPL trade war heats up as seven franchises show interest in Hardik Pandya
A significant trade war is unfolding in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as seven franchises have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring all-rounder Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians (MI). Following a challenging IPL 2026 campaign where MI finished ninth, Pandya and the franchise mutually agreed to part ways. This decision reportedly stemmed from intense mental exhaustion and a fractured dressing room environment.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are reportedly leading the pursuit for Pandya’s services. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have not entered the race, opting to remain spectators. The potential trade for the 32-year-old all-rounder is considered one of the biggest transfers in IPL history, with financial logistics and MI’s willingness to release their captain being key factors.
Contenders for Pandya’s Signature
CSK’s entry into the race has reportedly created an exciting contest with KKR and RR. CSK appears to be a suitable option for Pandya in the post-MS Dhoni era, although a guaranteed leadership role is not certain. In contrast, KKR is prepared to offer him the captaincy, and RR is also exploring a long-term leader in Pandya. Communication channels are active between MI and interested franchises like CSK and KKR as they explore various options for a potential trade deal.
CSK has reportedly been monitoring Pandya’s trade status with a patient approach, similar to their past successful trades involving Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran. However, late complications are possible, as player consent and negotiations between franchises are still required to finalise any deal. The question of whether Pandya would join a franchise without the captaincy remains a central issue in the negotiations.
Reports indicate that two respected former international captains have shown interest in the situation, with one franchise having offered leadership responsibilities. However, these initial discussions did not progress into concrete agreements, and a new round of talks is anticipated with all interested parties.
Implications for Mumbai Indians and Other Players
The outcome of Pandya’s potential trade could also influence MI’s future decisions regarding another high-profile Indian cricketer. Should both senior players depart, MI might consider pivoting towards a youthful rebuilding phase. If MI opts for an all-cash arrangement for Pandya, questions arise about whether a similar approach would apply to his teammate and how rival franchises might react.
Pandya’s return to MI was itself a significant all-cash deal ahead of IPL 2024, reportedly for ₹15 crore. This move followed his leadership of Gujarat Titans to consecutive IPL finals, including a title win in 2022. He had spent seven seasons with MI since his debut in 2015 before his move to Gujarat. Upon his return to MI, Pandya was appointed captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.
Under Pandya’s captaincy, MI experienced varied results. The team finished last in the league in 2024, and while they qualified for the playoffs in the previous year, their performance was reportedly not at their best. In the 2026 season, MI finished ninth. Pandya’s individual form also saw a dip, as he managed 206 runs at a strike rate of 138.25 and claimed four wickets in 10 games. Additionally, he was reportedly involved in several off-field controversies during this period.
Clarity on these developments remains elusive, but further updates are expected soon, with one deal likely needing to be finalised before another can take shape.
