Consumers in Uttar Pradesh will now have 15 days to recharge their prepaid smart meters. This change aims to ease the billing process and reduce the urgency for recharging.

Previously, users faced issues with power cuts when their balance ran out. Now, prepaid smart meters will function similarly to postpaid meters.

Key changes include:

  • Consumers will receive monthly bills detailing their usage.
  • Payment options now include 10 easy installments for outstanding bills due before April 30.
  • Bills will be calculated from the first to the last day of each month.
  • Notifications will be sent via SMS and WhatsApp directly to mobile devices.
  • Users can register complaints through the 1912 portal.

The government has decided to set up special camps to address issues related to smart meters and billing. Strict directives have also been issued regarding electricity supply.

Energy Minister A.K. Sharma stated, “This step has been taken keeping consumer convenience in mind.” He added that the new billing system will provide timely information about bills.

The initiative is expected to enhance user experience significantly, allowing consumers more time for payment and reducing stress associated with sudden power outages.
