The Punjab Assembly session erupted into chaos on May 1, 2026 as opposition members demanded an alcohol test for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The call for the test led to heated confrontations and multiple walkouts from the assembly.

Bhagwant Mann responded to the uproar by saying, “She corrected herself. She is not a member of the House. You even target my daughter. Ae bakwas karda yeh banda (this guy is talking nonsense).” The controversy began after Mann objected to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira using a mobile phone during the proceedings.

During this special Labour Day session, Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan rejected the opposition’s demand for an alcohol test. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa supported the call for an alcohol meter test for all MLAs, including Mann.

Following the chaos, the Congress staged a walkout from the House. Later, both BJP and Akali Dal MLAs also walked out. BJP leader Sunil Jakhar called for breath analyser tests for all legislators present in the assembly, emphasizing accountability among lawmakers.

The AAP government moved a confidence motion in the Assembly and passed it unanimously despite the turmoil. Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal accused Mann of appearing in the assembly ‘drunk’. Aman Arora of AAP criticized Congress remarks as baseless and damaging to public trust.

The session aimed to honor workers on Labour Day but ended up highlighting political tensions within the assembly. The atmosphere was charged, with AAP and Congress members exchanging sharp words throughout.

Officials have not confirmed if further actions will be taken regarding the demands made during this chaotic session. The next steps from both sides remain unclear as tensions linger in Punjab’s political landscape.
