Shahid Smriti Van is recognized as a significant urban ecological restoration project that effectively reduces air pollution in Surat. This initiative serves as the ‘green lungs’ for the industrial belt of the city. Developed from a former green waste dumping site, it spans an area of 19,000 square feet.

The project employs the Miyawaki method, which promotes rapid forest growth and biodiversity. This approach helps mitigate air pollution by absorbing harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide. The prevalence of asthma is increasing day by day due to air pollution and climate change.

Key facts about Shahid Smriti Van:

  • The initiative received national recognition during the National Environmental Conference at IIT Bombay.
  • It was planted in December 2019.
  • Dr. Mamun emphasized the importance of controlling air pollution to address respiratory problems.

A study from King’s College London highlights how exposure to higher levels of air pollution can delay speech development in babies. The study involved 498 toddlers born between 2015 and 2020. Researchers found that premature babies from polluted areas scored an average of 11 points lower on developmental tests.

The rise in harmful particulate matter, dust, smoke, and chemical pollution contributes to increased respiratory issues among children and the elderly. Yet, despite these alarming trends, officials have not confirmed specific measures to further enhance air quality regulations under the Clean Air Act.
