Rain: Heavy s in northeastern Brazil cause fatalities and displacement
Heavy rains in northeastern Brazil have resulted in at least six deaths and thousands displaced, underscoring the growing frequency of rain disasters in the region.
Flooding and landslides affected areas like Recife, Pernambuco, leading to at least two fatalities. About 1,500 people were displaced by storms across Pernambuco and Paraiba states.
The National Center for Risk and Disaster Management in Brazil issued 22 emergency alerts during the ongoing rain. These alerts reflect concerns over thunderstorms and potential further flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued a yellow warning for rainfall, lightning, and strong winds in Delhi for the next two days. It recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung station.
The IMD predicts temperatures will remain high, ranging from 36 to 38 degrees Celsius during the day in Delhi-NCR. These temperature fluctuations may exacerbate weather conditions.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated, “The government continues to monitor the situation to provide all necessary assistance.” This statement highlights ongoing efforts to manage the crisis.
A study released last year found that rain disasters, including flooding and landslides, tripled in Brazil from 1991 to 2023. This trend raises concerns about future weather patterns.
The IMD has raised operational levels to maximum alert due to impacts from storms in Pernambuco and Paraiba. Officials are preparing for potential further developments as weather conditions evolve.
