Puan Maharani emphasized the need for stronger worker protections on May Day 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Her call comes amid concerns over potential mass layoffs affecting up to 9,000 workers. The discussion highlights the urgent need for clear outsourcing regulations.

During this year’s May Day, workers presented 11 demands, including the elimination of outsourcing. Puan noted that achieving the target of creating 19 million jobs in five years will be difficult without strengthening the industrial foundation.

Puan supports forming a workforce to address layoffs but insists that work should not stop until employees lose their jobs. She welcomed the seventh number of Permenaker regarding outsourcing but called for clear limits on the types of outsourcing allowed.

Puan also highlighted that the income and job security of digital transport workers should not be seen as marginal issues. She mentioned a tragic train accident in East Bekasi that resulted in several workers’ deaths while returning home.

She stated, “The state must also ensure that transportation is safe and that facilities for workers’ families are truly qualified.” Puan affirmed that all workers, including domestic workers and online drivers, deserve equal protection.

Her remarks reflect ongoing discussions about worker rights and protections in Indonesia. The current state reveals a critical need for reforms to safeguard workers against layoffs and enhance their working conditions.
