Nagaland conducted large-scale disaster preparedness mock drills simulating a 7.7-magnitude earthquake on April 30, 2026, to enhance emergency response readiness across multiple districts. The exercise involved various stakeholders, including the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the Home Department, and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The eighth edition of state-level mock exercises focused on earthquake preparedness and extreme weather disasters. It was designed to test the state’s readiness for a major earthquake scenario, often referred to as the “mother of disasters.” The drills assessed coordination among departments and the effectiveness of communication channels—both critical in disaster response.

Community participation played a vital role in the mock drills. Local residents acted as first responders, highlighting the importance of community response in disaster management. The scenarios included potential landslides, damage to Dimapur airport, and building collapses that could cause casualties.

Key facts from the exercise:

  • The drill simulated a 7.7-magnitude earthquake.
  • Wind speeds during thunderstorms were forecasted at 40-50 km/h.
  • The exercise took place in multiple districts, including Kohima, Dimapur, and Kiphire.
  • A Civil Defence air raid and blackout exercise named ‘Operation Night Guard’ was also conducted.

Maj Gen K.J. Bahl noted that this year’s drill was impact-based, featuring district-specific scenarios that included estimated casualties and resource needs. Abhijit Sinha emphasized that effective coordination and communication are essential for successful disaster response.

Public feedback is crucial as ordinary citizens may face challenges during disasters that authorities might not immediately perceive, according to Rupin Sharma. This feedback will help refine future disaster management strategies.

Nagaland lies in the high-risk Seismic Zone V, making such preparedness initiatives vital for minimizing risks associated with natural disasters. Further developments regarding community training sessions or additional mock drills have not yet been announced.
