George Dockrell excited to test himself against ‘the best’

Ireland’s new T20 era

The Ireland men’s team is embarking on a new chapter in T20 cricket, with Lorcan Tucker taking over the captaincy from Paul Stirling. This leadership change marks a period of establishing a “new identity” for the team. The upcoming two-match series against reigning World T20 champion India, starting on Friday, is anticipated to be a significant test for the squad.

All-rounder George Dockrell expressed that this challenging assignment will offer a clear understanding of the team’s current standing. He noted that while the team may not play as frequently as desired, they aim to maximise every opportunity, whether it involves competing against top-tier teams or implementing new strategies.

Dockrell highlighted the players’ desire to be challenged, stating that these matches will provide valuable feedback on their performance and areas needing improvement. He also conveyed the team’s ambition to secure victories in the series.

Excitement for the India series

George Dockrell, an experienced member of the Irish side, shared his enthusiasm for the unfolding developments in Ireland T20 cricket. He described playing India as consistently exciting, particularly when the matches are held in Ireland, which he considers special for the team.

Dockrell mentioned the inclusion of new players and the evolving team identity, expressing excitement about testing themselves at the beginning of this new cycle. He also voiced support for the new skipper, Lorcan Tucker, commending his clear communication, calm demeanor, and thoughtful approach since assuming the captaincy.

The Indian team, under Shreyas Iyer‘s captaincy, faces decisions regarding player selection, especially concerning the potential international debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenager’s performance in the IPL and a notable innings for India A against Sri Lanka A have generated interest.

However, incorporating Sooryavanshi, an opener, into the starting eleven presents a challenge given the strong performances of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. These three players all scored fifties in India‘s ICC T20 World Cup final victory against New Zealand in March, which was the team’s last fixture in the shortest format.

India’s selection dilemmas

The management might consider moving Samson to the middle order, a position he has occupied previously at number four and five. However, these slots are currently expected to be filled by captain Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma, leaving number six as the only potential opening.

Traditionally, the number six position is for an all-rounder, and India has several options including Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Suryansh Shedge. Placing Samson at number six could mean the team fields with only five bowlers, a department already facing absences from players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammmad Siraj, and Varun Chakravarthy.

Samson‘s statistics at the opening position include 926 runs from 28 innings, with three hundreds and four fifties, maintaining a strike-rate of 181.93. His strike-rates at numbers three, four, and five are 121, 129, and 127 respectively.

Abhishek Sharma, identified as the number one T20I batter, has been effective as an opener, accumulating 1414 runs from 43 innings, featuring two hundreds and 10 fifties, with a strike-rate of 192.38. Both Abhishek (563 runs), Kishan (602 runs), and Samson (477 runs) had successful outings in IPL 2026. Additionally, Kishan recently scored 125 against Afghanistan in a second ODI in Lucknow.

The team management will need to carefully consider whether to give Sooryavanshi his debut or maintain the existing winning combination. The presence of Sooryavanshi is expected to put pressure on Samson and Abhishek to consistently perform to avoid being in a precarious selection position.

Captain Iyer is keen to begin his full-time captaincy with a series win. On the bowling front, India has a second-string lineup, and this series, along with an upcoming one against England, offers an opportunity for these players to demonstrate their abilities.

Harshit Rana‘s return from injury provides more options in the pace unit, where he will compete with Prasidh Krishna and Prince Yadav. Both Prasidh and Prince are in good form, with Prasidh recently achieving a career-best five-wicket haul in the third ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai.

Ireland will be without several key players, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, and Curtis Campher, due to injuries. Despite these absences, the team includes capable T20 players such as George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, and Jai Moondra, who will be playing in their home conditions. The first T20I match is scheduled to start at 6 PM IST on Friday.
