The Indian Navy’s Mahendragiri frigate, featuring advanced stealth technology, was officially handed over on May 1, 2026. This event signifies a major milestone in India’s indigenous naval capabilities.

Before this handover, expectations centered around the completion of Project 17A. The project aimed to bolster India’s naval fleet with modern warships. However, the timeline for delivery had faced delays and uncertainties.

With the delivery of the Mahendragiri, these expectations have shifted. The frigate is the sixth and final ship built under Project 17A. It measures 149 meters in length and weighs approximately 6,670 tons.

The Mahendragiri can reach speeds of up to 28 knots and sustain naval operations for 45 days. It incorporates state-of-the-art systems, including eight BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles.

This development directly impacts the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities. Approximately 75% of its components are indigenous, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Currently, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is leading a delegation on a goodwill visit to Myanmar until May 6, 2026. This visit aims to strengthen maritime cooperation between India and Myanmar.

On the same day as the frigate handover, the Indian Navy released the SSR Medical Admit Card for Agniveer recruitment examinations. The written examination is scheduled for May 16, 2026. Candidates must have completed Class 12 with specific subjects to qualify.

This series of developments highlights significant progress in India’s maritime strategy and defense readiness.
