FASTag Revolutionizes Toll Collection in India
The introduction of a barrier-less tolling system in India marks a significant shift towards automated travel on national highways. The new system, called FASTag, will be implemented on December 1, 2026, at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza along the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat.
Vehicles will pass through toll plazas without stopping. AI cameras and sensors will scan vehicle number plates and FASTags to facilitate this process. Toll payments will be automatically deducted from linked bank accounts or digital wallets.
Cash payments at toll plazas will phase out. Drivers must use FASTags or UPI for transactions. Penalties will apply for vehicles without valid FASTags or insufficient balances. QR codes will be available for UPI payments if the FASTag fails.
According to Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, “Now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle.” He added that the aim is to make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without stopping.
The government plans to make the highway network cashless and reduce human intervention significantly. Drivers must ensure their FASTag is active and linked to their bank accounts.
Entry to toll plazas may be restricted for repeated violations of these new rules. This initiative represents one of the major changes in India’s toll collection system.
