Faf du Plessis Takes Ownership Role in European T20 Premier League
Faf du Plessis and Jonty Rhodes are taking a significant step into team ownership in the European T20 Premier League, aiming to develop local talent in Dutch cricket. The duo co-owns the Rotterdam Dockers, one of six teams in the league.
The inaugural edition of the ETPL will take place from August 26 to September 20. Du Plessis believes that local Dutch players will be crucial for the success of his team. He emphasized, “It’s not your overseas players that win you competitions, it’s the local players.”
The ETPL aims to boost cricket in Europe and create pathways for local talent. Five of the six franchises have been sold, with one team still under negotiation. The tournament is co-owned by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan.
Du Plessis has extensive experience in franchise leagues around the world. He sees potential in this new venture. Jonty Rhodes added, “The ETPL offers exactly that, creating pathways to identify, nurture, and scale talent, and ultimately strengthening the game across Europe.” This initiative comes at a time when cricket is gaining momentum on the continent.
Rhodes also acknowledged some apprehension about this new role, stating, “It is an exciting place to be, (but) it’s a bit scary.” Observers believe that success in this venture could significantly impact cricket development in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands has had notable successes in white-ball cricket, defeating teams like England and South Africa. This background sets a promising stage for the ETPL’s first season.
