“If he fails to act, over 30 MLAs could break away and extend their support to Vijay,” said unnamed AIADMK MLAs. Internal dissent within AIADMK is growing as a faction of MLAs seeks to support Vijay’s TVK for government formation.
CV Shanmugam, a senior leader in AIADMK and Rajya Sabha MP, has become a focal point amid these discussions. The Tamil Nadu elections resulted in a fractured mandate, with TVK emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats. AIADMK won 47 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority needed for a stable government.
Over two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs met at CV Shanmugam’s office to discuss their options. They are considering aligning with TVK, which is currently 10 seats short of a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, consisting of 234 members.
The Congress party has extended conditional support to TVK for government formation. KC Venugopal, a Congress leader, noted that “TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress for support to form a Government in Tamil Nadu.” However, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai remarked, “The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted.”
The situation remains fluid. The internal dissent within AIADMK regarding support for TVK has not been fully confirmed. Coalition talks continue as parties navigate the complex political landscape following the elections.
