Who won in bengal election 2026
“People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the BJP’s decisive win in the West Bengal assembly elections on May 4, 2026. This marks a historic shift as it is the first time the BJP has won in a state previously dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The BJP is projected to secure more than 205 out of 294 seats, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule. The victory is viewed as a significant change in India’s political landscape, especially given the controversial revision of the electoral roll prior to the elections.
The voter turnout reached approximately 92.93 percent, a record high for West Bengal. The previous best performance by the BJP was 77 seats in 2021.
Yet, some analysts suggest that Hindu-Muslim polarization played a role in this election outcome. “The BJP had a strong and well-organized presence in West Bengal and Modi is seen as a charismatic leader,” noted political analyst Rahul Verma.
In contrast, Seema Das criticized TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, stating, “Didi has lost the track and only appeases Muslims to stay in power.” This reflects ongoing tensions within West Bengal’s political environment.
The BJP’s win coincides with its re-election in Assam on the same day. The party’s strategy appears to resonate with voters seeking change after years of TMC governance.
Political experts view this result as part of a broader trend influencing the electoral dynamics across India. The party system had turned hostile towards those who did not subscribe to their ideology, according to Praveen Rai.
This election signifies more than just seat counts; it indicates shifting allegiances among voters and evolving narratives surrounding governance and representation.
