Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Kounde

Reports had indicated that Tottenham Hotspur was preparing a significant bid for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde. The alleged offer was said to be around €65 million. This interest was reportedly driven by Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, who was said to admire Kounde’s versatility, seeing him as a suitable fit for the team. Kounde’s ability to play both as a full-back and a centre-back was highlighted as a key factor in this reported interest, especially with the anticipated departure of captain Cristian Romero.

The links between Kounde and Tottenham had appeared plausible given the London club’s perceived need for defensive reinforcements and Kounde’s somewhat inconsistent season at Barcelona. However, Kounde’s strong performance at the World Cup and his stated desire to remain with Barcelona suggested that a transfer might be unlikely, even with a substantial offer from Spurs.

Clarification on transfer rumours

Despite earlier reports, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Tottenham Hotspur is not currently pursuing Jules Kounde. Romano stated that there is no interest from Spurs in the 27-year-old defender this summer, and no negotiations are taking place between the two clubs. He also clarified that the London club was not preparing a €65 million bid as previously rumoured.

This update suggests that Barcelona does not need to be concerned about an approach from Tottenham for Kounde. For Barcelona, this comes as welcome news, as Kounde is considered a key player under manager Hansi Flick. He has established himself as one of the squad’s most reliable performers due to his consistent play, whether deployed at right-back or in central defence.

Kounde’s role and future at Barcelona

Jules Kounde is widely regarded as one of the top right-backs in world football when he is in form. Although he may have experienced a challenging 2025-26 season at club level, he reportedly regained his form during the World Cup, performing strongly for France. His importance to Barcelona is evident, as he is often one of the first names on Flick’s team sheet.

Given his significant role, Barcelona would likely only consider offers for Kounde if they were exceptional, particularly as the club aims to compete for major trophies this season. There is also a possibility that Kounde could be utilised more frequently as a central defender in the upcoming season. With players like Hector Fort, Eric Garcia, and Xavi Espart available to play at right-back, Flick could have the flexibility to deploy Kounde in a more central role.

While other European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Liverpool, have reportedly enquired about Kounde’s situation, Barcelona has indicated a willingness to sell if their valuation, stated to be no less than 60 million euros, is met. However, with the recent clarification regarding Tottenham’s interest, Kounde appears set to remain at Barcelona for the upcoming season, aiming to improve upon his previous campaign.

The defender’s uncertain status at Barcelona had led to various transfer speculations, but the latest information suggests that the rumours surrounding a move to Tottenham Hotspur lack substance.
