Romero freezes his move to Inter for the sake of Barcelona

Romero’s Barcelona aspirations

Cristian Romero, the Tottenham Hotspur defender, has reportedly paused discussions regarding a potential transfer to Inter Milan. His primary desire remains a move to Barcelona, with his representatives maintaining communication with the Catalan club’s sporting management. These ongoing talks suggest a belief that late transfer activity could lead to a restructuring of Barcelona‘s defensive line before the transfer window closes.

Romero is on Barcelona‘s list of potential acquisitions. However, the club has communicated that a move for him would only be pursued if one of their existing defenders or full-backs departs. This condition highlights Barcelona‘s strategy to manage their squad and financial fair play regulations.

According to reports, Inter Milan had presented Romero‘s agent with a four-season deal, which included a salary slightly less than his current earnings at Tottenham but offered additional years on his contract. Despite this offer, talks from the player’s side reportedly stalled. An agreement on the transfer fee was also not reached, as the English club is said to be seeking 50 million euros, although they are reportedly open to negotiations.

Tottenham is reportedly prepared to allow the Argentina international to leave. The possibility of a loan deal with an option to buy has also emerged, particularly if the player continues to push for an exit. This situation suggests that Tottenham is willing to facilitate Romero‘s departure under certain conditions.

Inter Milan, not willing to wait indefinitely, has reportedly reached an agreement on terms with Manchester City defender John Stones, whose contract is nearing its end. This development sends a clear message regarding Inter‘s stance: they would only consider signing Romero now if they are able to sell Pavard during the current transfer window.

The situation reached a standstill once Romero made his preference to wait for Barcelona clear, following the interest shown by Deco in signing him. This indicates the player’s strong inclination towards a move to the Catalan club.

Barcelona’s defensive considerations

Barcelona is not ruling out the possibility of reshaping its defensive unit. The club is exploring two main avenues. One option involves signing a top-class defender if a current defender or full-back, such as Araujo or Kounde, were to leave. The second approach is to pursue a player with potential for growth, ideally a left-footed defender.

The Salinas deal also remains under consideration at Barcelona, though the club is reportedly unwilling to meet Racing‘s asking price of 16 million euros. This indicates Barcelona‘s cautious approach to transfer fees.

Romero is reportedly willing to accept a pay cut to facilitate his registration with Barcelona. The passage of time could also benefit the Catalan club, as Tottenham needs to offload players, and the Argentine defender is scheduled to report for training with the London side from 10 August.

Despite Barcelona‘s appreciation for Romero as a player, a move is considered unlikely due to his high salary, which reportedly would not align with the club’s current wage structure. Barcelona is operating under strict salary constraints and aims to avoid complications with La Liga‘s Financial Fair Play regulations.

As things currently stand, a transfer for Romero to Barcelona appears highly improbable. This has led to speculation that the Argentine could instead be heading to Inter Milan, with the Serie A champions reportedly keen on adding the defender to their squad this summer.

For Barcelona, manager Hansi Flick is expected to continue relying on Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin as his preferred starting centre-back partnership. Eric Garcia is also an option, and Andreas Christensen is highly regarded by the manager, who played a significant role in his contract renewal. Ronald Araujo, despite potential increased competition for places, reportedly has no plans to leave the club. Alvaro Cortes, who made his first-team debut last season, will also be considered as an option by the manager.

Romero‘s current contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2029.

Other clubs’ interest in Romero

Beyond Inter Milan and Barcelona, other clubs have also shown interest in Cristian Romero. Reports indicate that Arsenal is involved in a three-way competition for the Tottenham Hotspur player this summer. This suggests that Arsenal would need to compete with Inter Milan and Chelsea in the pursuit of the Argentine defender during this off-season.

Romero‘s performances for Tottenham have been noted, with him scoring six goals and providing four assists in 32 appearances across various competitions last season. He is considered among the talented centre-backs in the Premier League. His ability to tackle, anticipate danger, and distribute the ball from the back are highlighted. Standing at 1.85m, he is also described as a strong aerial presence who can contribute to scoring and creating goals for his team.

Given his experience in the Premier League, it is suggested that Romero would adapt quickly if he were to join Arsenal. His potential to enhance the quality of Mikel Arteta‘s defence and compete for a regular first-team spot is also mentioned. At 28, Romero is considered to be in his prime, making him a suitable fit for clubs looking for immediate impact and sustained performance over the next few years.

The interest from multiple clubs underscores Romero‘s market appeal, even as his focus reportedly remains on a potential move to Barcelona.
