Liverpool: The Jeff Bezos factor - unpicking puzzle of Liverpool's potential investors

Potential investment in Liverpool

Reports indicate that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been approached regarding joining a consortium that is looking to acquire a stake in Liverpool Football Club. This development follows earlier news that a group led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia had expressed interest in a minority investment in the Premier League club.

The consortium led by Bhatia has reportedly made a provisional offer to purchase approximately 30% of Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Bhatia, who was a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years, transferred his shares in the west London club recently, which appears to clear the way for his involvement in the Liverpool bid.

Sources close to Bhatia did not comment on whether Bezos had been directly approached, stating only that discussions had taken place with various potential investors. FSG also declined to comment on the matter. The proposed deal with the Bhatia consortium is understood to value Liverpool at around a significant sum.

Bezos’s prior interest in sports ventures

Jeff Bezos, identified as the fourth-richest person globally, has not yet invested in sports, though he has explored such opportunities previously. In 2023, he was linked to a potential takeover of the NFL franchise Washington Commanders. He also reportedly considered purchasing the Seattle Seahawks, another NFL team.

Despite these explorations, Bezos ultimately did not submit offers for either franchise. He stepped down as Amazon’s chief executive in 2021 to become executive chairman, retaining an 8% ownership in the company. His other ventures include ownership of The Washington Post and the aerospace company Blue Origin.

Amazon, under Bezos’s leadership, has diversified into entertainment, acquiring sports broadcasting rights for its streaming services. This includes live UK rights for 20 Premier League games per season for six seasons until the end of last year, and broadcasting the Champions League in several European countries, as well as the NFL in the US.

FSG’s financial standing and future outlook

FSG’s decision to seek new investment comes at a time when Liverpool is in a strong financial position. The club announced record revenues in February, placing it as the highest-ranked Premier League club in the Deloitte Football Money League. This contrasts with 2023, when FSG sold a minority stake to Dynasty Equity to offset pandemic-related revenue losses and reduce debt from projects like the club’s training centre and the Anfield Road stand expansion.

The current pursuit of investment prompts questions about FSG’s long-term strategy. Since acquiring Liverpool in 2010, FSG has overseen significant success, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup since 2019. The group has also invested in upgrading the training ground and developing the stadium.

This period of potential ownership change coincides with other significant shifts at Liverpool, including a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, and changes at a senior management level. Michael Edwards has stepped down as FSG’s CEO of football, partly due to a shift in the ownership’s focus away from investing in other football clubs. Additionally, Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, has been linked with a move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

For Liverpool supporters, the prospect of new investors raises questions about potential new ideas and approaches, particularly if the investors are new to elite-level sports. The club’s long-term future under FSG, who explored selling the club almost four years ago, remains a topic of discussion among fans.

Amit Bhatia’s consortium is believed to have secured financial backing from his father-in-law, Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, whose family wealth is estimated to be substantial.
