“This victory is the victory of the people of Panihati, of the entire Bengal,” said Ratna Debnath after winning her debut election on May 4, 2026. Debnath, the mother of a murder victim, secured her position as a BJP candidate in the Panihati Assembly constituency.

Debnath won by a margin of 28,836 votes, receiving 87,977 votes compared to 59,141 votes for Tirthankar Ghosh from TMC. Kalatan Dasgupta from CPI(M) came in third with 24,032 votes.

This election marks a significant moment in West Bengal’s political landscape. The BJP achieved a historic win, crossing the two-thirds mark with 202 seats. Debnath’s campaign focused on women’s safety and accountability in governance.

Debnath entered politics following the brutal rape and murder of her daughter at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. This tragedy triggered widespread outrage and became a central theme in her candidacy.

“I dedicate this victory to Prime Minister Modi,” she stated. She acknowledged the support she received during her campaign: “I could not have done this alone.” Her victory resonates with many who have faced similar tragedies.
