ICC confirms qualification pathway for cricket's LA28 Olympic return

The India women’s cricket team has secured a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking cricket’s return to the Olympic Games after a gap of 128 years. This qualification was achieved despite their exit from the group stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. India earned Asia’s single automatic berth through the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) newly confirmed qualification pathway.

The ICC officially announced the qualification criteria for the LA28 Olympics, which will feature six teams each in both men’s and women’s T20 competitions. India’s qualification stems from being the highest-placed eligible finisher from Asia in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup. Although the team did not advance to the semifinals, they finished above other Asian teams in the tournament, securing the continent’s only automatic Olympic spot.

Olympic Qualification Pathway Details

The qualification system allocates one automatic place each for Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. These spots are awarded to the highest-placed eligible finishers from each continent in the Women’s T20 World Cup, with a limit of one representative per continent. Alongside India, Australia secured Oceania’s berth, while South Africa qualified from Africa by reaching the knockout stage. Great Britain, represented by England in ICC competitions, claimed Europe’s place.

Consequently, Australia, Great Britain (England), India, and South Africa are the first four women’s teams to qualify for LA28. The fifth spot could go to the host nation, the USA, if they manage to enter the top 15 of the ICC Women’s T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. Should the USA not meet this requirement, the berth will be given to the highest-ranked non-qualified team in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings as of March 1, 2027.

The sixth and final Olympic position will be determined by the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. This eight-team event will include the highest-ranked eligible nations that have not yet secured qualification.

The ICC also addressed the situation concerning the West Indies. As the West Indies compete as a combined ICC member and are not recognised as a National Olympic Committee (NOC) by the IOC, they cannot participate as a single team at the Olympics. If they are among the highest-ranked non-qualified teams, a separate Caribbean qualifying tournament will be held to decide which nation will advance to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Men’s Qualification and Event Structure

For the men’s T20 event at LA28, the United States men’s team is on track to compete as hosts. The qualification pathway, approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), indicates that India, Britain, South Africa, and the United States are in line for the men’s competition. One team each from Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania will be selected based on ICC rankings at a cut-off date of December 31, 2026. Australia and New Zealand will contend for the Oceania spot, while the USA will represent the Americas, provided they remain within the top 15 of the ICC rankings.

The sixth team in the men’s event will emerge from a global qualifier featuring the next eight highest-ranked teams that have not yet qualified. Similar to the women’s pathway, if the West Indies are among these eight teams, a regional tournament will determine which NOC represents the region at the final global Olympic qualification tournament. The winner of this global qualifier will complete the six-team competition at Los Angeles.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described cricket’s return to the Olympics as a significant moment for the sport, providing a clear path for member nations. ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta noted that the qualification model aims to balance competitive standards with global representation, while also introducing a new qualification event. Each qualified nation will be permitted to select a 15-member squad. The six teams will be divided into two groups of three, with the top two teams competing for the gold medal and the third and fourth-placed teams vying for bronze. All cricket matches at the 2028 Olympic Games will take place at a purpose-built venue in Pomona.
