Max Verstappen extends Red Bull deal until 2030
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing to the team until the end of the 2030 season. This extension aims to conclude ongoing speculation regarding the Dutch driver’s future, as he had been linked with potential moves to teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.
Verstappen’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028. However, his prior agreement included clauses that would have allowed him to depart at the conclusion of the current Formula 1 season if he chose to do so. The decision to remain with Red Bull comes despite a challenging start to the current season for the team, which has seen new regulations for cars and engines introduced.
Verstappen’s Perspective and Team Dynamics
Expressing his satisfaction with the extension, Verstappen stated, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.” He further added that the team feels like a second family and he feels very much at home. Verstappen highlighted the shared goal of achieving success, noting that continuing his journey with the team he has been with throughout his career is special and something he has always desired.
Verstappen’s best performances this season have been two second-place finishes, achieved at the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix. These results follow a closely contested previous season where he came within two points of winning the world title against McLaren’s Lando Norris. That close call in 2025 followed a significant comeback in the latter half of the season, overcoming a deficit of over 100 points to the championship leader.

Despite Red Bull’s performance challenges, which have led to Verstappen voicing frustration at times, he ultimately chose to stay with the familiar environment. This decision was made even as his trusted race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren by 2028. Verstappen’s statement of renewal included commendation for team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role in July of the previous year.
Verstappen praised Mekies, stating, “Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team.” He also mentioned that everyone at Red Bull’s base in Milton Keynes believes in the team’s direction, and he looks forward to competing for more victories and championships.
Impact on the Driver Market and Team Outlook
Laurent Mekies commented on the extension, calling it “fantastic news” to have Verstappen continue with the team and retain what he considers the best driver on the grid. Mekies emphasised the unique partnership between Verstappen and Red Bull, highlighting Verstappen’s competitiveness, determination, and courage. He noted that Verstappen’s impact on the team and Red Bull’s motorsport history has been transformative, and he has been fundamental to their collective achievements.
The extension of Verstappen’s contract has significant implications for the Formula 1 driver market. It solidifies Red Bull’s position and removes a potential top-tier seat opening that many drivers might have targeted. This move is seen as a victory for Red Bull, reaffirming its status as a leading team for the foreseeable future.
For other drivers, such as Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri, Verstappen’s decision closes off potential avenues to a top seat at Red Bull. Any driver hoping to lead a team like Red Bull would now face the challenge of competing against Verstappen. The timing of Sainz’s new deal with Williams, announced the day before Verstappen’s extension, suggests a reshaping of options for other drivers.
The commitment from Verstappen is also viewed as a vote of confidence in the direction F1 is taking with its current regulations, despite his previously expressed dissatisfaction with the new engines introduced this season. His decision to stay averts the potential embarrassment for F1 of its strongest driver leaving due to a lack of respect for the sport’s product.
While the deal extends until the end of 2030, standard mechanisms within F1 driver contracts allow for potential departures if performance expectations are not met. The announcement of the contract extension coincides with Verstappen’s final home race this weekend at Zandvoort.
Verstappen began his F1 career with Red Bull’s junior team, then known as Toro Rosso, in 2015. He was promoted to the senior team after four races in his second season, 2016, where he immediately secured his first race victory. Since then, he has accumulated 71 Grand Prix wins and four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 race victories behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
Laurent Mekies expressed confidence in the team’s future, stating that the decision to continue their journey together is rooted in mutual trust and confidence in the team’s vision. He concluded by saying, “There are more races to win, more milestones to achieve and more history to write.”
