Portugal’s Commercial Future Post-Ronaldo
Portugal’s Commercial Future Post-Ronaldo
Portugal could experience a significant commercial and visibility challenge when Cristiano Ronaldo concludes his international career. A marketing expert has indicated that the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) risks losing substantial revenue and global attention if it does not prepare for the departure of its most prominent player.
While Ronaldo has not yet confirmed his international retirement, he stated during the 2026 FIFA World Cup that it would be his final appearance in that tournament. Portugal‘s exit in the last-16 against Spain has amplified discussions about the future for both the player and the national team.
According to Daniel Sá, executive director of the Portuguese Institute of Marketing Administration (IPAM), the FPF faces a considerable branding challenge once Ronaldo steps away. Sá noted that, from a brand perspective, Ronaldo is significantly larger than the entire Portuguese national team combined.
Sá believes that Ronaldo‘s influence extends beyond his on-field achievements. The Al Nassr forward has been the face of Portuguese football for over two decades, driving sponsorships, television viewership, and commercial partnerships in an unparalleled manner. Sá described the potential loss of media attention as a “tragedy” when Ronaldo eventually leaves.
The marketing expert highlighted Ronaldo as the primary force behind the FPF‘s commercial success, responsible for numerous contracts and significant earnings over more than 20 years. Sá urged the federation to develop a new identity before Ronaldo‘s departure becomes official, suggesting a need for a different narrative that is not solely dependent on one individual.
Ronaldo’s Enduring Influence and Market Predictions
Ronaldo‘s value is no longer defined exclusively by his performance on the pitch, according to Sá. With over one billion followers across social media platforms, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has become one of the most influential sporting figures globally. His extensive global sponsorship portfolio, business ventures, and digital reach establish him as a powerful commercial asset in football.
Sá anticipates that Ronaldo‘s influence will continue to grow even after his retirement from playing. The FPF has acknowledged Ronaldo‘s commercial value. João Medeiros Cardoso, the chief marketing and commercial officer, stated that it would have been unwise not to build campaigns around Ronaldo, particularly during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, a major commercial market for football.
Cardoso also emphasised that while younger players such as Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes are expected to lead Portugal into a new era, replacing Ronaldo‘s cultural and commercial impact is considered nearly impossible. He compared Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the most influential people in history.
Despite his age, there is market speculation regarding Ronaldo‘s potential return to the Portugal national team. A contract on a prediction market platform, Kalshi, showed an implied probability of approximately 81% that Ronaldo would play another official match for Portugal after July 20, 2026, and before his retirement from international duty. This probability increased significantly in a single day.
The market’s movement was influenced by reports suggesting Ronaldo intends to continue playing for Portugal in the UEFA Nations League under new coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo had previously stated that the 2026 World Cup would be his last but did not announce retirement from the national team.
Jorge Jesus has indicated that Ronaldo remains part of his plans, stating he would select him as long as he is playing and in suitable condition. This public commitment from the coach, combined with Ronaldo not retiring, has contributed to the increased probability in the prediction market.
Portugal is scheduled to begin their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign against Wales at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon. Reports from several outlets suggest this fixture could serve as a symbolic farewell for Ronaldo, given its connection to the early stages of his career. This information, however, remains unconfirmed by Ronaldo or the federation.
The next competitive fixtures for Portugal are the UEFA Nations League matches in the autumn. Any appearance by Ronaldo in an official match for Portugal after July 20, 2026, would resolve the Kalshi contract as “yes.”

Ronaldo is the most-capped player and record scorer in men’s international football for Portugal. He is also the only player to score in different World Cups. His contract with Al-Nassr runs through June 30, 2027.
The Kalshi market’s estimate of 81% reflects the probability as of July 22, 2026, driven by recent reports and the new coach’s comments, rather than an official confirmation from Ronaldo himself.
The clearest trigger for the market to resolve as “yes” would be Ronaldo being named in a Portugal squad for the Nations League and playing any minutes. Conversely, a formal retirement statement from Ronaldo or confirmation from the Portuguese Football Federation that he will not feature again would lead to a “no” resolution. Squad announcements ahead of the September window will be closely watched.
Portugal‘s next match is scheduled for September 24 against Wales in the UEFA Nations League.
