Indian athletes compete across multiple events at Commonwealth Games
Indian athletes participated in various events at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on July 27, with notable performances in weightlifting, athletics, swimming, and boxing. The day saw a silver medal win, several qualifications for finals, and some early exits from the competition.
In weightlifting, Gyaneshwari Yadav secured a silver medal in the women’s 53kg event. She achieved a personal-best total of 199kg, comprising an 88kg snatch and a 111kg clean and jerk. Following this achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Yadav.
Weightlifting and Athletics Highlights
Attention later turned to Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam, who competed in the women’s 58kg weightlifting final. In the snatch discipline, she successfully lifted 83kg on her first attempt, followed by 85kg on her second. She completed her snatch campaign with a successful lift of 87kg. This placed her behind Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who set new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Record with a 103kg snatch. Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau also remained in contention after clearing 95kg on her third snatch attempt.
In athletics, Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the men’s long jump final with a best jump of 8.01m. Lokesh Satyanathan also advanced to the men’s long jump final with an effort of 7.77m. Tejas Shirse secured a spot in the men’s 110m hurdles final, finishing third in his heat with a time of 13.76s.
However, Gurindervir Singh exited the men’s 100m event. He finished 28th overall in the heats with a time of 10.39 seconds, failing to qualify for the semifinals, which required a top 17 finish. Despite a promising start in Heat 4, he faded in the final metres. Jamaica’s Rohan Watson won that heat with a time of 10.13 seconds. Gurindervir Singh’s time was below his personal best and national record of 10.09 seconds, set earlier in the year.
Swimming and Boxing Progress
In swimming, Sajan Prakash advanced to the men’s 200m butterfly final after clocking 1:59.58. Swatik Patil qualified for the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final, recording the sixth-fastest time in the heats at 1:15.85.
Boxing saw success for India, with Sachin Siwach moving into the men’s 60kg quarter-finals. He secured a 4-1 split-decision victory over England’s William Hewitt. Ankush Panghal also reached the men’s 80kg quarter-finals, defeating Zalaan Jan of Antigua and Barbuda 5-0 in the Round of 16.
In artistic gymnastics, Protistha Samanta finished seventh in the women’s vault final. Several other Indian athletes are scheduled to compete in upcoming events, including Putul Sonowal in lawn bowls, Sakshi in women’s boxing, and Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla and Sharmila in para athletics shot put. The men’s high jump final will feature Sarvesh Anik Kushare, Aadfarsh Shankar, and Tejaswin Shankar.
Additional medal events scheduled for later include the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final with Swatik Patil, the men’s 79kg weightlifting final with Valluri Ajay Babu, and the men’s 800m freestyle final with Aryan Nehra. Sajan Prakash will also compete in the men’s 200m butterfly final. The men’s T38 100m final will see Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi, while Tejas Shirse will participate in the men’s 110m hurdles final.
The day’s events concluded with Sumit competing in the men’s 70kg boxing Round of 16 against Jon McConnell of Northern Ireland.
