Glasgow: Mirabai Chanu secures third Commonwealth Games gold, India adds two silvers
India experienced its most successful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing one gold and two silver medals. This brings the nation’s total medal count to four. Indian boxers continued their strong performances, and the men’s swimming relay team advanced to another Commonwealth final.
Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medallist, was a highlight of India’s fourth day. She achieved her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. In weightlifting, Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi each earned silver medals.
Chanu’s Golden Hat-Trick
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu reaffirmed her position among India’s top weightlifters by winning the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. After an initial unsuccessful attempt, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist delivered a dominant performance, achieving a combined lift of 190kg.
She established a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 85kg and then lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk, securing her title. This victory marks her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, following wins in 2018 in Gold Coast and 2022 in Birmingham. Her overall medal count at the Commonwealth Games now stands at four.
Chanu’s competition began after other participants had finished. Despite a challenging start with a failed opening snatch attempt at 82kg, she quickly recovered. In the clean and jerk, she also faced a moment of uncertainty, failing her first attempt before successfully lifting 105kg on her second try. This lift not only secured the gold but also set a new Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk category and improved the total lift mark. With the gold secured, Chanu opted not to take her third attempt.
Weightlifting Silvers and Boxing Progress
Rishikanta Singh Chanambam earned a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. The lifter from Manipur successfully cleared 116kg, 119kg, and 121kg in the snatch, with his best lift matching the Commonwealth Games record. He then managed 143kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total lift of 264kg. Muhammad Anik bin Kasdan of Malaysia won gold with a Games-record total of 273kg, while Joshua Amunga Buoya of Kenya took bronze with 260kg.
Raja Muthupandi contributed another silver medal for India in weightlifting, competing in the men’s 65kg category. The lifter from Tamil Nadu recorded 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, for a combined total of 286kg. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin secured gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, and Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea claimed bronze with 282kg. This silver medal marks a return to the Commonwealth Games podium for Muthupandi, eight years after his sixth-place finish in Gold Coast in 2018.
Indian boxers continued their strong campaign. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam advanced to the quarter-finals in the men’s 55kg category after a unanimous 5-0 decision victory over Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman. After a close first round, Mandengbam gained control, scoring a knockdown in the second round. He is set to face England’s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals. In the women’s 54kg Round of 16, Preeti Pawar secured a dominant win against Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje by referee stops contest (RSC), also moving to the quarter-finals. However, Aditya Pratap Yadav experienced a setback, losing to Uganda’s Nuhu Batte by a 3-2 split decision in the men’s 65kg Round of 16.

The team recorded a time of 7:39.48, placing behind Australia and England, and secured their progression as the sixth-fastest team overall from the combined heats. Later, the same quartet competed in the medal race, finishing sixth in the Commonwealth Games final.
