Stats: Buttler goes top, India hit new low - Cricbuzz

England has ascended to the top position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, concluding India’s 1,601-day tenure at number one. This change follows England’s dominant performance at home, securing a 4-0 series victory over the current T20 World Champions.

The series culminated in a decisive 56-run win for England in the fifth and final match held in Southampton. This victory sealed a comprehensive whitewash for England, with the opening game of the five-match series having been affected by rain in Chester-le-Street.

Dominant Batting Display Secures Series

In the final T20I in Southampton, England posted a substantial total of 257/3 after being asked to bat first. The innings was highlighted by a record-breaking 233-run partnership for the second wicket between Jos Buttler and Harry Brook. This stand marked the highest for any wicket in men’s T20I history.

Jos Buttler delivered a standout performance, scoring 131 runs off 64 balls, which included 12 fours and eight sixes, marking his career-best T20I score. Harry Brook, the captain, remained unbeaten with 95 runs off 45 balls, narrowly missing a century. His innings also contributed to the dismantling of India’s bowling attack.

England’s aggressive batting left India’s bowlers struggling. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in four overs, Prince Yadav gave away 60 runs, and debutant Suryansh Shedge leaked 39 runs in three overs. The visitors faced a challenging chase of 258 runs.

Despite efforts from Ishan Kishan, who scored 56, and Tilak Varma, who made a quick 53, India could only manage 201/8 in response, handing England a memorable series clean sweep. England’s performance throughout the series was strong across all departments, with Buttler and Brook leading the charge in the finale.

India’s Reign Ends After Strong English Campaign

India’s slip to second place in the rankings marks the end of a significant period at the top, which began in February 2022. The 4-0 series defeat, following a 2-0 loss to Ireland late last month, contributed to their decline from the number one spot.

The series saw England dominate the four completed games. They handed India their biggest defeat in T20Is in Nottingham and successfully chased down 159 runs in just 13.4 overs in Bristol. These clinical wins were crucial in their ascent to the top of the rankings.

Under the leadership of new captain Shreyas Iyer, India has faced challenges, suffering six defeats since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad in February this year. The team has struggled to find consistency during the tour.

Ahead of the final T20I, England’s skipper had publicly stated that achieving the number one ranking was the team’s objective, a goal they successfully accomplished with their commanding series performance.

Key Performances and Team Strategy

The partnership between Harry Brook and Jos Buttler was a highlight of the series, particularly their 233-run stand in the fifth T20I. Buttler’s century and his quickest half-century in T20Is showcased his impactful form, while Brook’s unbeaten 95 further solidified their batting prowess.

England’s strategy to target the number one spot was evident in their consistent performances. Their ability to secure clinical wins and dominate matches, even after the first game was affected by rain, demonstrated their focus and execution.

The series marked a significant shift in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, with England’s strong home performance leading to their new status as the top-ranked team.
