Deschamps questions referee after France’s World Cup semi-final exit to Spain
France manager Didier Deschamps expressed frustration with the officiating following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final in Dallas. The loss brings an end to France’s campaign for the championship, though they will still participate in the third-place playoff match.
Deschamps stopped short of directly blaming the referee for the outcome but questioned the overall standard of officiating. He specifically highlighted a first-half penalty awarded to Spain as a point of contention, suggesting it was part of a broader pattern of unsatisfactory decisions throughout the match.
Officiating Under Scrutiny
The decisive moment in question occurred in the 22nd minute when Lamine Yamal was fouled by Lucas Digne inside the penalty area. Digne had miscontrolled the ball while attempting to clear it, allowing Yamal to gain possession before contact was made. Mikel Oyarzabal successfully converted the penalty, giving Spain an early lead.
Deschamps remarked to reporters, "If I say anything, I’ll look like a sore loser because we lost. But I ask you: is the referee up to the task of officiating a semifinal? There’s the penalty, but that’s not all; it adds to everything else. I have nothing against the referee tonight, but ask yourselves the question." The Salvadoran official for the match was Iván Arcides Barton Cisneros.
While the penalty was a significant point of discussion, Deschamps indicated his concerns extended beyond that single incident. He noted that it was an "accumulation of things" that led to his displeasure with the officiating during the semi-final.
France’s Performance and Spain’s Dominance
Despite his reservations about the referee’s performance, Deschamps acknowledged that France’s overall display was not sufficient. He admitted that the team "simply were not good enough" on the night, marking their third consecutive defeat to Spain, following previous losses in Euro 2024 and the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
Spain extended their lead in the 58th minute with a goal from Pedro Porro, set up by Dani Olmo, who broke through the French defence. By this point, Spain had already registered eight shots compared to France’s two and had won nearly 60 percent of all duels, demonstrating their control over the game.
France ultimately managed 10 attempts on goal, but only one originated from within 13 metres of the goal, and just three shots tested the goalkeeper. Their first shot on target did not occur until the 81st minute of the match. Notably, Kylian Mbappe, a frontrunner for the Golden Boot, failed to register a single shot on target during the game.
Deschamps commented on Spain’s defensive strategy, stating, "Today Spain defended extremely well. They left us very little space. On top of that, because we made technical mistakes, it became difficult to create problems for them. Our technical level was below what we’d shown in previous matches." Spain’s defence was particularly effective in neutralizing French stars such as Mbappe and Ousmane Dembélé.
Spain’s strong defensive record in the tournament has been a key factor in their success, having conceded only a single goal in seven World Cup games leading up to the semi-final. Their victory against France secures their place in the final, where they will compete for their second World Cup championship.
Deschamps’ Tenure Concludes
Deschamps’ 14-year tenure as France manager, which began with a 2018 World Cup triumph and included a defeat in the 2022 final to Lionel Messi’s Argentina, will conclude with the upcoming third-place playoff. This match will be played on Saturday against the loser of Wednesday’s semi-final between England and Argentina.
The semi-final loss to Spain marks a tough exit for France, who were considered by many to be favourites in the tournament. Despite the controversial penalty incident, Spain’s overall performance in the match was widely seen as deserving of their victory.
