Chennai to host Big Bash League opener between Renegades and Scorchers
Big Bash League comes to India
The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to commence its 2026-27 season in India, with Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium hosting the inaugural match. This historic fixture will mark the first time a BBL game is played outside Australia. The announcement was made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Albanese’s visit to Australia.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will compete in the opening game on December 12. The Melbourne Renegades will be the designated home side for this significant event. This match will officially kick off the BBL 16 season.
The decision to host a BBL match in India is part of a broader initiative to strengthen sporting ties between the two nations. Both prime ministers unveiled the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, which aims to leverage Australia’s expertise in hosting major sporting events and India’s growing ambitions in the sector.
This collaboration is also expected to open new avenues for trade, tourism, and investment between India and Australia. The roadmap outlines key areas such as capacity building, sports science and technology research, and industry and investment.
Strengthening bilateral ties through sport
The Roadmap on Sport Cooperation is anticipated to deepen collaboration in staging major international sporting events. Australia is preparing to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while India is gearing up for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Prime Minister Albanese emphasised the shared passion for sport between Australia and India. He stated that the new Sports Roadmap would strengthen bilateral ties through cooperation in capability building, technology, and research, while also boosting trade, tourism, and investment.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the match in Chennai would make the domestic Australian T20 competition the first foreign cricket league to be played in India. This event will serve as the centrepiece of a week-long Australian cultural festival held across India in December.
He also noted India’s efforts in democratising technology and sports, mentioning the country’s hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its aspirations to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The Big Bash League, established in 2011 by Cricket Australia, features eight city-based franchises and is held annually between December and February.
Broader cooperation between nations
The announcement of this sports collaboration follows significant pacts between India and Australia in various sectors. These agreements include civil nuclear energy, maritime security, critical minerals, and enhanced defence ties.
The two nations also agreed to firm up the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral investment protection framework. These efforts aim to enhance trade and investment between India and Australia.
Key defence developments from the Third India-Australia Annual Summit included the adoption of the India-Australia Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation (JDDSC) and the India-Australia Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap (MSCR). These were among 18 major outcomes announced during the summit.
The summit concluded with significant advancements across defence, maritime security, energy, cyber and critical technologies, education, mining, research, and cultural cooperation, marking an expansion of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The opening BBL match is scheduled for December 12.
