Chelsea secures Morgan Rogers in record-breaking transfer
Rogers joins Chelsea
Chelsea has confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033. He is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad in preparation for the 2026/27 season.
Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, stating that Chelsea is the biggest club in London and one he has admired since childhood. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for the project under the new manager, the current players, and the club’s future direction.
The transfer represents a significant acquisition for Chelsea, with the club agreeing to a record fee for a British player, reported to be £117 million. This deal marks a substantial investment by Chelsea owners BlueCo during their four-year tenure.

Journey to Stamford Bridge
Morgan Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his time at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that played a part in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He also helped guide the Midlands club to a top-four finish and later to lift the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
Since his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular fixture for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. He started in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina and the 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off, which secured a bronze medal for England.
The move for Rogers was reportedly agreed upon rapidly, with formal negotiations between Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Rogers’ representatives commencing on a Thursday. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso then contacted Rogers to discuss his plans, and personal terms were finalised on the same day. This swift process was seen as a positive by Rogers.
The deal involved key figures from Chelsea’s ownership and sporting director team, including Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Additionally, Chelsea captain Reece James spoke with Rogers while they were in the England camp, and teammate Cole Palmer reached out via text, signalling the club’s strong interest in securing his signature.

Versatility and future prospects
Rogers was a target for several major clubs both domestically and internationally. His performance last season for Aston Villa, which included 14 goals and 11 assists, made him a highly sought-after player. Despite having five years remaining on his contract with Villa, Chelsea successfully secured his transfer.
Chelsea’s interest in Rogers stemmed from his versatility as an attacker, capable of playing on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physicality, size, and attitude were also noted as valuable attributes. He is viewed as a humble individual with strong emotional intelligence, capable of developing into a key leader within the squad.
Xabi Alonso’s direct communication with Rogers was a significant factor in the transfer. Alonso, who was hired in May, conveyed his desire to bring Rogers to the club and outlined how he would be utilised. Rogers was reportedly impressed by Alonso’s passion and strong reputation as both a player and manager.
This transfer marks Rogers as the fourth signing for Chelsea this summer as the club undertakes a squad overhaul. Previous arrivals include defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda. Chelsea had previously shown interest in Rogers before his move to Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024, particularly after he scored against them in a Carabao Cup tie.
Aston Villa, while reluctant to lose Rogers, acknowledged the need to sell key assets to reshape their squad and comply with UEFA financial regulations. They had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup. Aston Villa had previously secured Johan Manzambi from Freiburg as a direct replacement.
The deal for Morgan Rogers was finalised on Saturday, with the player signing a seven-year contract with Chelsea.
