Arsenal strengthens midfield with Guimaraes

Arsenal has reportedly reached an agreement with Newcastle for the transfer of their captain, Bruno Guimaraes, for a fee of £75m. The Brazilian midfielder has been granted permission to travel for a medical examination. This move comes after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed a desire to build on the club’s recent success, which included winning the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years last season and reaching the Champions League final.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m, has made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals. He had informed Newcastle earlier in the summer of his wish to join Arsenal if a suitable offer was made. Newcastle had initially rejected Arsenal’s opening bid for the 28-year-old player.

Why Arsenal pursued the Newcastle captain

Mikel Arteta has consistently sought to sign players with prior Premier League experience who have demonstrated their ability to perform at the highest level. The addition of Guimaraes is seen as a step towards achieving Arsenal’s goal of developing one of the strongest midfields in global football. The club believes Guimaraes can help them compete effectively on multiple fronts, especially after facing numerous injuries last season.

Last season, Arsenal played 63 games across all competitions. The club has since restructured its medical department ahead of the new campaign. The demands on players like Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice were significant, with Rice playing the most minutes of any outfield player at Arsenal and returning from a World Cup campaign where England reached the semi-finals. Guimaraes’ arrival is expected to provide depth and maintain quality, allowing for rotation without a drop in performance.

Guimaraes is also recognized for his leadership qualities. He became a key figure for Newcastle during his tenure at St James’ Park. His ability to connect with supporters and his overall impact on the team’s performance are notable. Data from Opta indicates that Newcastle’s win percentage, points per game, average goals scored, and average goals conceded were significantly better when Guimaraes was on the field. He was also Newcastle’s top scorer in the league last season with nine goals and contributed four assists for Brazil at the World Cup in his five starts.

Guimaraes’ impact and future role

Despite missing six games due to a hamstring injury towards the end of last season, Guimaraes ranked among the top players in the league for defensive line-breaking passes and through balls. He also led Newcastle in passes under high-intensity pressure, highlighting his willingness to take on responsibility. Staff at Newcastle have described him as an “inspirational” figure, and Arsenal hopes he will bring a similar influence to Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle had been keen to retain Guimaraes, who had two years remaining on his contract, with a club option for a third. However, if the deal proceeds as anticipated, Newcastle stands to gain over £240m from player sales this summer, including the transfers of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m and Sandro Tonali to Spurs for £100m. Newcastle insisted on their valuation for Guimaraes, aiming for a fee that would be among the highest paid for a player aged 28 or older.

Guimaraes’ move is considered a significant statement for Arsenal, adding a highly-regarded midfielder to a squad that already includes players like Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri. This acquisition is expected to provide Arteta with more tactical options and allow for strategic rotation, particularly for Declan Rice after his demanding season.

The deal for Guimaraes was sanctioned after he respectfully expressed his desire to leave, believing it to be his last major opportunity to win titles. Newcastle maintained that the situation was handled properly, with Guimaraes attending their training camp in Spain on Monday, 5 August 2026.
